philly area skaters

i am moving back home from phoenix after 8 years out west. i am from the western burbs like havertown-brynmawr etc. out here i have been on a twice a week open hockey schedule which has been great. good turnouts, good players etc. what is the situation with pick up back there? i avoid the leagues which are so expensive and the ice time not as much.

also, how about the hockey shops? i am familiar with max's hockey shed in H-town but thats about it. out here it is pretty weak. we dont even have one mission skate dealer! sharpenings are sketchy at best. its sad because there are so many transplants out here from hockey country.

I skate around the Willow Grove area. If you are willing to drive to the Montgomery mall area, there is a store called Hockey Heaven. It's pretty big with a lot of equipment.

As far as pickup, no one really has Saturday public hockey. Friday nights is hit or miss.

If you're moving back to the Havertown area, I'm sure you know about the Skatium already. I don't really play there that much so I have no idea about their pro shop or open hockey times and their website sucks so there's no real info there.

Ice Line in West Chester has a pretty decent pro shop. They are really helpful and have a good selection of equipment.

They also have open hockey daily around 12:00 PM or so.

They are about 30 minutes from Havertown

Ice Works in Aston also has pretty decent pro shop. Their prices are a little high though.

They have open hockey daily at 10:45 AM and on most Friday and Saturday nights. There are also several groups that play out of there on weeknights and weekends that you could hook up with to get extra sessions in. Just call the rink and ask if any groups need skaters.

They are also about 30 minutes from Havertown.

I've also heard really good things about the Pond in DE. I hear they have a great pro shop but I've never been there.

I play in the DVHL at all these rinks and the Ice Works proshop is probably the best pro shop, while Hockey Heaven is amazing as store by itself. THey even have a mini rink in the back.

One of the guys mentioned The Pond in Newark Delaware. I’m not sure if your looking for open hockey, a team, or shops more so than the others but I have my own open’s and teams locally and know a lot of the guys that frequent the University of Delaware rinks, The Pond Ice arena, and the Skate Club of Wilmington. If you would like to know anything about any of the three I’d be happy to help, message me.

Additionally I know several people that make the trip up to the ice lines and ice works of PA and they must do it for a reason. Don’t get me wrong I never deluded myself that Delaware was a hockey hotbed; we only had 1 player from DE right? And he was a jerk that drove a jeep or so they say… maybe they were just jealous. My older friends did get a kick of playing with him when he filled in some of our adult league games as a kid.

Sorry for the ramble…

The same place that threw out their pro shop? Last I heard they tried to replace it with tanning beds but they weren't permitted for some reason.

Yes, at one point they doubled the rent for the PIAS that used to be in there just to force them out. We called and asked what the rent would be and they said they had no intention of putting another shop in there.

I'm a second year Midget so next year I'll move up to 18. Do you go to the Flyer's Cup? I play for Freedom High School and we went last year and got ripped apart, but should have won.
