Football Helmet Question

Recommended Posts

Alright, my son is in the 110 lb division in his football league. He is small, 71 lbs, and has sustained two concussions in the past two seasons. I was wondering if I should invest in the Schutt DNA helmet, or the Riddell Revolution.... He is most worried about comfort and protection. Any suggestions or advice would be great. Oh yeah, he is currently using the VSRY-4, or something like that.

One last thing, don't suggest a different mouthguard. He is already using a custom-made dentist one.

Once again, thanks guys.

EDIT:He is going to be in the 130 lb division next year, so that is why Im so concerned also.

I don't know the situation with football leagues in your area, but I should point out the obvious: a 71 lb kid playing with 110 lb kids is going to get demolished regardless of what helmet he's wearing. If you can, put him in a division closer to his weight or have him play a position where he'll get hit less.

Actually, he is the hardest hitter in his league, and is the starting running back for his team. It is just that he's gotten concussions and ends up with headaches after his games. He borrowed a friends DNA helmet for a practice and found it rather comfy. It's just tht he hasn't had the opportunity to try on the Revolution. It just seems the Revolution and DNA would be the obvious choices because of the number of pros wearing them, and by the info I have read about them online. He is very tough, but he is going to be with kids almost twice his size next year.

Revolutions are undeniably more comfortable than a standard helmet. I would definately recommend one. I haven't tried a DNA, but I'm pretty sure they are based on similar concepts. The DNA I would think would be more comfortable and protcetive after reading about it, but I can't say for sure because I have never seen one.

I wore a Schutt (I believe, no idea what model) in Jr High and freshman year of high school without any problems I was only 75lbs in 8th grade and 85lbs freshman year. Only got hit once where I even got my bell rung and that was on scout offense in high school, playing wide out where our scout QB (assitant coach) hung me out to dry and I got destroyed by one of our DBs while I was fully extended and I ended up landing on my head. Otherwise I didn't have any problems, but I never had much of a brian to worry about being 5'0" nothing basically and being outweighed by so much.

I would say either helmet would be a good investment in helping prevent concusions; as long as a helmet with the proper fit is selected this includes the chin strap. I bought an Adams chinstrap for my helmets (team issued) and made sure it was clipped in at 4 points at all times. Personally if the helmet isn't secured in such a manner that it is able to follow the player's head movements exactly it is too loose and can allow for injury; helmet slidding etc etc.

Best of luck to your son on a safe and fun season.

I just see so many pros and college players wearing the Revolution. My son would not be able to try the Revolution on, and only had a limited experience with the DNA. Thanks Ambros and ctaz

I played ball at the high school, college and minor league level (I say that for credibility and usefulness of content within this message) and would say that the DNA is the most comfortable and protective helmet on the market. I don't know if it's partly because of my hard skull, but in my traditional Air helmets I could feel a headache coming (before it actually came) from the speed and nature of an impact. Many of those same hits had a much softer effect when I switched to the DNA my last year of ball. The Revolution is only a slight step up from the Air line, the DNA is the Cadillac. Hope this helps.
