Skate life?

Recommended Posts

I've been skating for 5 years now, and classify myself as a mid-to-good D level player. I'll never be called 'fast' but I do use crossovers in all 4 directions, along with running starts, quick stops, etc..

My question is this: When should I think about replacing my skates? I'd guess that I've played about 150 games in these skates over my 4 years in league, plus another 20-30 stick sessions. Overall they're probably getting close to 200 uses..

There aren't any obvious problems with the skates like rust, breakdown or deterioration, but I'm finding it harder to maintain good edge control and glide. I usually compensate by tightening my laces after warmups, but they're starting to feel squirrely even when tight..

The skates are Mission Amp 3's that I bought 5 years ago. They were heat fitted about a month after I bought them, but since then all I've done is had them sharpened, replaced rivets, and replaced laces.. I almost always hang them out to dry within a day or two of a game..

Sorry, sounds like the boots may be losing their support and breaking down.

After a closer look at my skates, I think it's definitely time for new ones. If I hold the boot tightly with one hand, I can move the lower end stuff around just by hand. I imagine it's flexing around all over the place when exposed to skating forces.

I'll post another thread for selection/purchasing help..

You'll find helpful advice in the following thread, and in the thread that this thread links to!

Hey Jitt - the link inside that link doesn't work (I suspect a problem swithcing between MSHv2)

Can you look it up for me? thx

Poof! Just like that it seems that info is now gone as I can't find it anymore either. As I recall:

- Stiffness is gone. With one hand it's easy to squeeze the boot and have the eyeholes on both sides come together easily. It's also easy to twist the skate as described above.

- After taking the insoles out you can see the rivots and fittings are rotted.

-I think those are the big two. Cosmetic damage on the outside usually isn't as much of a problem as people may think. With the exception of obvious major rips and holes.

Try this link.

The upgrade seems to have changed the URLs such that you need to follow the domain with "/forums/". If you're searching with google OR looking at old threads that link to other old threads, you're going to need to manually edit the URL. If they could get back to the old URL scheme, or even provide a redirect, a lot of broken links would fix themselves.
