Took mine off the very first hockey helmet that I had till now. I think it allows alot more air flow (definately a plus in humid Singapore) and doesn't pinch the ears. Less safe but I make up for it by using a cage. :D

Never taken a puck, but back in high school I took a butt-end to the ear and it was massively painful. I notice the guards on my current helmet, but I don't mind them enough to risk that sort of pain again even if it's unlikely to happen.

I have mine off for the moment, but if I'm told to put them on and I have a close encounter then I'll put them back on willingly. They aren't that big of a deal to me.

My league requires a HECC certified helmet, so I have to leave them on. I would leave them on no matter what. It's worth the extra protection...plus, I don't even notice them.

If your play with a cage on leave them if you don't have a cage or have a halfy take them off. Nothing looks dumber than some idiot that takes the cage off, but leaves the ear covers on and some even leave the J-clips on. (Sort of a pet peave)
