Bo from Boston 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2004 agreed - but, if you are building in high volume, machined tools are the only way to go. Ceramic and sand molds cannot be effectively cooled so you are left waiting till the material hardens. An aluminum mold can have coolant routed thru it for quicker process time stick to stick. Plus, the tolerances you can acheive in metal are far more exact than either of the other options. Ultimately, a high volume manufacturer will hard tool in metal. They will do the prototyping in ceramic, go thru any number of slight changes, then transfer that design to metal. Then it all about velocity thru the tool.
