Interesting crack in Vector 10 SE skate

Recommended Posts

I have an interesting situation with one of the pairs of Vector 10 SE skates.

The picture says it all:

The crack is actually underneath the Exo-Skel....it feels like the crack is in the chrome behind the clear plastic Exo-Skel. It does not appear that the crack is behind the chrome as well, as the quarter panel does not seem to be bending behind the crack in any way. I was wondering if anyone has seen this, and what suggestions you might have on what to do. It doesn't seem to be affecting the stiffness of the skate, so I am wondering if the chrome is just a cosmetic thing behind the Exo-Skel for the "flashiness" of the skate. They are only two months old.

Thanks!

i havent seen how the boot is made/chromed out... so this is a shot in the dark. If thats a clear plastic piece and they applied a chrome finish to the back of it to give the mirror effect, its possible the boot flexed enough after taking a puck or just skating to cause the chrome to 'crack'.

im willing to bet its just aesthetic, not structural

I have a small hole there, its just cosmetic.

So you have a similar situation with the chrome? When I push on the plastic Exo-Skel, I can feel the chrome separation. Do you have a picture of yours? Did you call CCM and ask them about it? Just curious as to your determination that the issue is cosmetic. I believe it is as well, because I can not see such a thin piece of what feels like aluminum foil through the plastic contributing to the stiffness of the ankle or the Exo-Skel. Is the carbon ankle insert between the FIT and the quarter panel?

Well, I must tell you that my experience with CCM on this situation has been great so far. I sent them the pic and explained the situation, and they told me it was most likely cosmetic. BUT, they told me that if I wanted a new pair, they would give me an RMA and send a new pair. They checked and verified they have a new pair in stock in my size. I could not be more pleased with their customer service. I know others have had issues with sticks, but with skates so far they have been top notch. Thought others would like to know.....they intend to stand by their products.

A friend of mine had they same sort of thing happen on his 05 Vector Pros. I know, different boot, but the crack grew on it until the Plastic started to seperate from the boot. CCM was pretty good about it they replaced the skate for him since it was still under warranty. He actually requested some Pro Tacks back instead of Vectors and they honored it. He worked for a LHS at the time so I don't know if that's something they would usually do.

CCM did not see a need for me to go through the LHS....I sent them the pic and it was all they needed. They sent the pic to product development, and I would assume their willingness to replace the skate is also motivated by their desire to figure out how it happened to prevent it in the future. That is a good sign in my opinion.

Last year when I needed my vector pros RMAed they wanted me to go through my LHS which made things difficult. I got new vector 10.0s so it was ok I guess....Mine is a small hole/crack this size 0. I suspect it cracked when we flexed the skates.

Perhaps to give good customer service. Because a product they sold to someone for a lot of money didn't perform as desired, so they want their customer to be satisfied, so as to choose their products again in the future, and have good things to say about them to other people (i.e. this board). Even if it's something small like that, if it was important enough for him to call the company, it makes a difference, and he obviously expects something done about it.

Took the words right out of my mouth...and my guess was that they wanted to find out exactly what happened. Regardless of whether something affects the performance of the skate or not, premature cosmetic wear has certainly hurt sales before. CCM has proven to care enough to request the skate for the RMA to determine how this happened and to address it with product development. That is what a company interested in producing a quality product does.

Period.

To my knowledge, the Vector 10 and the Vector 10 SE are identical except for cosmetics.

I have seen tell tale mold markings in that area on skates hanging on the wall at LHS's.

I don't think I would be concerned with performance or durability because of that.

UPDATE:

Got the RMA pair of new Vector 10SEs today....and interesting enough...the Exo-Skel is DIFFERENT than the original Vector 10SE. What was once clear is now Chrome on the Outside of the Exo-Skel, similar to the Grey Exo-skel on the original Vector 10.
