Carbs for Hockey

Which carbs yield the most benefits for sports and hockey in general when taken before: simple carbs or complex carbs (whole wheat, fibre-full foods). For instance what would be the difference when eating a whole wheat pasta before a game rather than a simple white pasta?

I've always thought it was just carbs in general that will give you fuel. I love me some spaghetti and chicken before every game. Load up on bread as well.
