If you ever get a chance have the same discussions with guys like Lemaire, Lapointe, Robinson...I know it's unlikely, but trust me when I tell you this...not just Hull was strong..he was an exceptional athlete of course, but surely in all the years of the NHL since he played, there should have been a few players of equal strength who also had the advantage of the high tech sticks we are all so quick to claim as a major improvement, as well as all the touted training who could best his records.

As stated I worked with guys who routinely performed feats of strength similar to the one I described, as part of their daily jobs...and most of these guys also played hockey....You simply cannot compare a routine of 4 hour workouts, to someone who has to perform equal or even greater feats of strength all day long for months on end and does it for most of their life.

There is a famous story about Jacques Lemaire when coaching I think it was the Devils, getting pissed at the guys taking snap shots because he thought they were so weak.....He grabbed a stick walked into the circle and fired a shot that hit the goalie between the eyes and dropped him like a stone...Hull's wrist shot was recorded at 105 mph....and although he was the possessor of the fastest shot, he was not the only one who could drill it.

My point is that in the past some atheltes have achieved levels of performance that have yet to be bested, due to dedication and incredibly hard work, not steroids and modern training methods..so that maybe there are levels of achievment which can surpass those of the juice users, if the dedication is there.

Honestly, rest and recovery is one thing athletes do better when training these days. I don't think guys ever performed the same feats of strength all day long as guys do in the weight room. Lifting for strength does not consist of a million reps of sub-maximal weight, it consists of lifting 90%+ of your 1RM and then recovering. Overvolume will not allow the body to recover and get stronger.
