Jackal3688 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2004 Has anyone ever had any problems with their hands or their fingers getting all chafed and raw when lacing up their skates? I have waxed laces on my skates and whenever I go to lace 'em up my hands get chafed by the laces. Also, whenever I go to take them off, its always really hard to get under the laces and pull them loose, and my knuckles also get raw from that as well. Just wondering if anyone else has ever had any problems like this and what you did about it.
stevo 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2004 Yeah I have the exact same problem as you describe. To be honest, I just deal with it. I don't let my raw knuckles really get to me. I guess you could try wearing a glove or something if it's really an issue for you...I know that if someone busted out a glove for lacing up their boots in any dressing room I've ever been in they would shamed into tears. bulletproof_funk 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2004 I had that problem with non-waxed laces because they would never stay put, so I had to readjust them repeatedly. Other than getting raw hands whlie trying different skates on in stores, I don't get that problem with waxed laces. It could be that your skates are pretty stiff and you're really wrenching the laces to bring your skate sides together. You could try those lace pullers they sell for a couple bucks. T-handle with a metal hook. Or try surgical latex gloves.
stevo 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2004 I don't know. I guess I'm talking about a different level of damage to my hands from lacing up my skates. This "rawness" must really be affecting your everyday lives if you would consider using latex gloves to prevent this.

Just lace them up as normal but go from the outside of the eyelet to teh inside. It should solve the problem of slipping laces.
bulletproof_funk 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2004 Yes, I have tried backlacing before with non-waxed laces, but by accident. I never noticed any difference though. I haven't tried backlacing with waxed laces yet because I've never really needed to, they hold tension pretty well for me done up normally.
kosydar 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2004 Wasn't it Renberg who got a staph infection from cuts from lacing his skates?

kosydar 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2004 You act like you're complaining about him not being in the lineup. Most Leafs fans embrace those moments. Didn't it happen to Thornton and McCarty two seasons ago, too? I know DMac had a staph infection and he put in his own IVs.

7joe1 0 Report post Posted July 13, 2004 Yeh i have had this problem as well. I usually do them loose and then after a quick skate when i have warmed up a little it doesnt hurt my hands as much to tighten them or make adjustments.
