are the websites LYING about these retail prices to make their own prices look better?

The answer is yes, the web sites just make up a high retail price and then list their "sale" price underneath. For example, Model X goal pads, Retail $1499.00, our price $1199.00. They make it sound like you are saving $300 but in truth the retail prices are set at the sole discretion of the store. The only thing the store can't do is advertise some items that the manufacturer says must have a minimum advertized price.
