What's on Niedermayer's skate?

Looking through some pictures from last night's game and came across this picture of Scott Niedermayer, and I noticed something strapped onto his right skate. At first I thought it was those shot-blocker things like Pronger wears, but Niedermayer's is a lot thicker and just on one foot. Did he injure his foot and is using this as a cautionary measure, so as not to hurt it again?
