Have any of you gone from taping your ankles, to not

Recommended Posts

So, since I started skating, I have been taping my ankles, for extra support.

I feel I am getting stronger on my skates now, and from what I read here, I will have more flexibility and motion if I don't tape them.

So, is it a tough adjustment, or should it be pretty easy?

I think taping my ankles has given me not only support on my ankle, but now it's almost a mental thing.

Any tips, advice, or should I stick to what I have been doing?

I went from doing it, to not doing it. And after the first skate noticed nothing different. If anything, I felt the tape made my ankles weaker because of the support it added, thus doing less for my ankles.

It does take a period of readjustment. You might want to consider going to a couple of skating sessions until you make the adjustment.

Having experimented with taping and not taping. I find that taping keeps my ankle in alignment with my leg thus making every stride a more efficient one. However I am not able to flex forward as much on take offs.

At the moment I'm not taping and it took me 4 skating-only sessions to feel I could play without taping my ankles.

I'd say it will be uncomfortable at first , but that's really like changing anything in your game. Remember to try it more than once , because you might still be adjusting and not really be ablr to tell if you like it or not.

I never taped my ankles, too restrictive, IMO. If you can, though, try going without the tape during a couple public skates rather than games, so you don't have to worry about adjusting in the middle of a game.

I also made this transition. I started to notice that with tape I wasn't getting maximum forward flex while skating and it felt restrictive. What I did to knock the habit was to not tape so tight and tape lower and lower on the boot each time to "make it seem" I had the tape on, like a comfort thing. After a little while you'll notice the tape not doing anything for you and you'll stop. At first it will feel like your skates are "loose" and your ankle will for lack of better term, roll around inside the boot, but your ankles will get used to and you'll be fine.

My coach told me not to. He said that I wouldn't be able to move ankle freely. But I do tape, not heavily but two to four times. I just feel more secure by doing that.
