FYI- As of last night the lights no longer go on at the DG Rink in Whitestone.

Rumor has it they're tearing the rink down and building a playground.

I play in Long Island City Queens. There is a rink on 28th street between 36th avenue and 37th- Dutch Kills Park. Guys play on saturday mornings with nets and goalies.

I do not know them but I was going to bug them soon. I practice by myself on sundays around 1pm before the soccer dudes kick me out and make fun of me.

It must be something at all the rinks in Queens because the rink where my league plays at the lights have been out all week.

The city must be doing this for cost cutting then......... :(

I wonder if the lights at parks in Jamaica and Harlem are out too......

that would be a damn shame. hockey in general gets no love, but roller...lucky to have a proverbial pot to p!ss in.

Just got an update about the situation at the rink in Glendale. The Parks Department in an effort to save money will only be putting the lights on from either 6:30-930 (The time our permit is for). This is total bullshit, because their are kids in the neighborhood (though not many) who skate before our games and stuff, now they are being totally shutout of being able to play after they do homework and stuff because the City of New York is being cheap and doesn't want to run up an electric bill.

is that 6:30-9:30pm every day? or only game days?

also, has there been any games so far this week? i wasn't able to go last night to ours and not sure if anything went down...

No games since the 10th. I would think it would be every day since it would be hard for them to keep changing the timer so that they wouldn't go on during the weekends, but with the Parks Department who knows. Another thing that sucks is that the weather has really held up for us, we've only had a couple of really cold days and or rain/snow outs. The major issue has been problems with the lights thanks to the city. Dealing with the city really blows.......

it would seem they're run much like any other City agency...slowly and without any regard for the people who need them.

the lights is one thing, but the surface is already ruined because they didn't finish the coating (even when it got warm enough) and the moisture has loosened up the green coating along the east boards. NYC parks dept FTW!!

They did finish the coating, I looked into it it was not supposed to get a poly coat on top.

The problem why it's chipping and stuff is because that side of the boards doesn't get any sunlight so when we get bad weather, everything just sits there and doesn't get a chance to dry off. Cause if you notice all of the issues with the chipping is on that side of the boards, no where else. We had the same issues in the past but apparently in their infinity wisdom, they forgot that we told them about that issue.

I am working on finding out how to go about fixing the chipping and also working on finding a way to maybe get a little drainage on the benches board side to maybe help out getting the snow and ice off the rink faster when it melts.
