New steel problems

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Long time reader, first time poster here. I appologize ahead of time for the long post. Here goes:

After a long summer of working out and playing a ton of hockey unfortunately an inexperienced LHS worker overheated the blade on my 6 month old Vapor XXX skates. I've been wearing the XXX since they came out and am on my 3rd pair. I did not know, or even realize that my blades had been messed up until I returned to school and could not even hold an edge for 20 minutes after a sharpening.

I've never known much about radius or the technicalities of sharpenings/steel and I've tried learning more and solving my problem on my own but I really need help. I play for a top ACHA D1 team (just to give you a referrence of the speed of the game) and am not really a power stride guy, I have a ton of footspeed. ANYWAY, given all of that, I asked the LHS here at my school when they installed the new steel to rocker my skates to make the transition easier. Three more trips into the pro shop within 2 weeks asking them to round it out even more have gotten me nowhere. I feel as though I'm skating on skis and I can't get up on my toes to generate speed like I was on my old skates. Turns are stressful on my knees and my balance is completely thrown off. Prior to the new steel i felt as though I had a "balance point" under the balls/instep of my foot where i could generate power and rip tight turns. Are they simply not rockering the blade enough? Should I ask for a certain radius? I understand without my skates in front of you, you cannot "solve" my problem, but I am asking for any type of advice you can give me on what I should ask of the LHS. I appreciate your help/advice/time in advance. I was hoping some of the experts on this board could weigh in for me since no one has really been able to help so far.

Signed, Frusterated Speedster

I feel your pain. I had my brand new RBK goalie steel destroyed by an idiot.

Go somewhere with a CAG machine and, as LKPT says get a shorter radis put on, and ask them to do exactly what you described: move the balance point to the balls of your feet. They should be able to do it, and explain exactly what they did so you can ask for it again.

What did you have done to the 3 pairs of XXXs prior to the screw up? I take it they were okay? Take them to the same guy/ girl if they were. Does your program have an experienced equipment manager? Most D1 schools do I would think. Ask him/ her to help you achieve what you need. JMHO.
