Skate Hollow

Recommended Posts

No, not a flat edge. They sharpened it to a knife point and a very dull one at that.

Oh, okay. Did you watch them skate on it? That'd be fun to see first hand!

No they had been skating on it at their pond and it was getting a little dull. They just wanted me to sharpen it up a little. I told them it was going to cost $25 and they had to leave them overnight. Thank god they took them to the play it again around the corner. I really didn't want to spend a couple hours fixing those things.

After reading this thread today, I went and got my skates sharpened at a 1/2 hollow as opposed to my usual 5/8. I'm pretty light (145, 5'9), and I was having a hard time making the real sharp turns.

What an improvement! I was really starting to think that it was just my mechanics, but the deeper cut really seemed to make a significant difference for me.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm just under 130LB and 5'3, just starting out ice hockey for the first time, have played roller for the last 2 years, started at 1/2 and I was slipping all over the ice, I couldn't even skate in a straight line.

So the next sharpening I went down to 3/8, made a world of difference but it seemed to have too much bite and drag so couple of sessions later(last night's practice) I decided to move up to 7/16 and it feels like a very good balance between having too much bite and not being able to skate in a straight line. The funny thing is, from my transition over from roller, I can hockey stop ok going backwards but I can't do it going forward at all :D
