How to choose lie and stick length?

Recommended Posts

I don't believe I've seen the combination of lie and stick length discussed on this forum.

My question is do you think it's better to use a lower lie and a longer stick or a higher lie and a shorter stick. I'm still trying to figure out what lie and stick length works best for me.

Of course, there will be some personal preference involved, but I'm wondering what are the technical advantages and disadvantages for each case?

Thanks for your help,

qmechanic

Find the length of stick that feel best to you and get the right lie for that length. A shorter stick will help your stickhandling but will take a little velocity off of your shot.

I use a longer stick for the extra reach on defense but it certainly doesn't help my stick handling. It all comes down to preference and what your needs are, I know I'm not going to be walking around many people, but hopefully most won't walk around me either. :-)

OK, here are some answers.

1) I play forward, mainly defensive forward, but I'm trying to become more offensive.

2) I'm a good passer, but I'm trying to become a better shooter. One of the reasons that I'm experimenting with my lie and stick length is because I really want to improve my shot. It seems like with lie 5 patterns (at least the ones with little curve, e.g. Forsberg/Tkachuk), I always cradle the puck with a closed blade, which doesn't give me enough time to do the wrist snap.

3) I mainly take wrist/snap shots. I'm not exactly sure why the lie would be important for the type of shot.

4) I wear Grafs with Cobra holders.

My current stick is up to my mouth when I stand in shoes.

So what would you recommend?

There is too much to consider when choosing a proper stick lie/length.

1)Position you play

2)Are you a shooter, passer or both

3)What kind of shooter, slap shots, or wrist shots

4)Skates you wear, if you’re on Grafs with corbras you lean more forward, if you’re on Supremes with C+ then you’re on your heels, this will change your stick length and you’ll need to adjust the lie too.

5)Also don’t forget the more rocker you have on the bottom of your blade the more versatile your lie becomes.

Me personally I’ve tried low lie from 4.5 to high lie of 5.5 I think to get the most out of your stick and to be able to play any position I need 4.7 lie with a big rocker on the bottom. I think I need a Zubov pro curve in LH, or Kovalev in 4.7 lie.

Remember the lower the lie the better it is to handle the puck at full speed, but harder to stick handle close to your feet or receiving passes closer to your feet.

Cheers
