LHS and ordering

Recommended Posts

A question...I've recently realized my skates don't fit exactly right and I'd like to try a pair that do fit right. I've also recently realized that, with the amount of time I spend on skates, I don't really need to buy semi-top of the line skates anymore.

So, off I go to LHS. I try on a few pairs of 150-200 dollar skates and each has the same problem: the width. At around the 5th or 6th eyelet, the damn things bulge out in an unsightly way...so much so that I can see the edge of the tongue when I'm in some of them. I and my semi-experienced but great salesperson agree I need to try a wide skate. Problem is, they don't stock *any* wide skates.

Ok, I ask the guy if he can order a couple models in wide, including a model they don't stock (but the brand they do carry). He says he'll call me and does. Tells me that they will oder the models they carry in wide, but the model they don't carry they will not order. I have a sneaking suspicion that it is the model they don't carry that will fit me best.

Do I ask them to order the model they don't carry with a promise to purchase, or what? It's rather difficult for me to head off to another store to try on more skates. Advice extremely appreciated.

I would say that going to another store with a more expanded skate stock is in your best interest. That "promise to purchase" could backfire. What if they dont fit well at all. Have you ever tried that model on somewhere else? Skates are, in my opinion, the most important piece of equipment to take your time with when purchasing a new pair.

I agree completely with you. I have to travel a fair distance (which is difficult given my time constraints) to get to another store, so trying other widths etc. out is very difficult. I hve tried a very similar fit to this model in a regular width. I thought as a last resort the promise to purchase bit I'd have at least a bit of a chance with a trade or a sale (at a loss) if they didn't fit. I'm reasonably convinced that they will fit, but not %100. Likely it's a horrible idea :) Might have a chance to try something on this weekend, but only if I'm lucky.
