newb skate blade question

Recommended Posts

So I'm at my drop in game, guy points out he is using someone elses skate and points to the front toe portion of the blade, its almost down to the holder at the toe. Got me thinking. After the game I look at my CCM E-60s and see the front portion of MY blades are closer to the toe of the holder than they are to the heel at the holder. Is this what they call the pitch of the skate? or is it from our local skate sharpener and is it something I need to worry about? Thanks in advance.

It's not something to worry about if you're comfortable skating with that pitch. From what you've described, you've got a forward pitch on your runners.

It is not pitch. It is acceptable for the toe radius to be more rounded than the heel radius. Many people like to shave down the toe metal when they get new skates. CCM Proformance steel has a profile where the toe is shorter to begin with. After numerous sharpenings it will get even lower. It's generally not a problem until you start hitting toe plastic on starts. Having said that, a bad sharpener can take off too much if they have bad technique. If you had a pic, we could evaluate better.

Personally, I think more metal on the toe is better for more powerful starts/push offs and full power during the leg extension.

Sorry didn't want to start another skate thread, I have in the last year went from wearing a size 6.5 size pro tacks to now a size 5 Vapor XXXX. I wore the tacks for probably 8 years prior not knowing any better and then got sized proper about a year ago in a junior skate. I am liking the fit of the XXXX and of course the price but I feel unbalanced and leaning more on my heels which i have read is normal for Bauers in general. I have read the profiling threads and am wondering what I should ask my sharpener specifically to do when i go in this week.

Tell your sharpener that you feel like you are on your heels, if they know what they are doing, they'll know what to do. Forward pitch for sure, and the radius length will be based on your style and input.
