Ovechkin

Recommended Posts

As a Caps fan, and as much as I really like OV, i think they really need to look seriously at the trade market for him. The latest rumor is:

Nashville would send 2 #1's, Dumont, Zidlicky and Suter (possibly Weber depending on who you talk to ) to Washington for Ovechkin and Kolzig?

I got no problem getting rid of Kolzig and his cap hit for next season. Most people will tell you that 3-4 solid NHL players are better than 1. Not saying the caps should do it, but it will be interesting to see how much teams are willing to give up for OV

Weber is a stud and he is without a doubt a future #1 defenseman. I think the only defenseman of his age not named Johnson I'd build around before him is Phaneuf. Dumont and Zidlicky are good players, and Suter seems like he will be a good defenseman some day. Basically that trade equates to getting a #1, #2, and #3 defensemen, a first line forward and two draft picks. If Nashville gives up that much talent, those draft picks could be pretty decent (I'd just assume one of them is in the Tavares draft, too). As much as I like Ovy, this is the type of lopsided Quebec/Philly deal that turns teams around. I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Thats not a rumour, that is made up bullshit from eklund, who people still read for some reason.

There is no legs to the rumour whatsoever.

Kolzig is a UFA atthe end of the season, and while he makes $5.something mil now, is expected (if the caps resign him) to only make about $2.5 mil or so.

There is no cap hit on him next year.

There is no way the caps trade him either, he is not just the best player, he is who they build their marketing round, and the dropoff in sales would be terrible (as bad as it is now)

Since they made the coaching change, the caps have actually played some damn good, and even more entertaining hockey.

I think they are positioned to do well in the future
