has anyone switched from Missions to Rbk skates?

Recommended Posts

currently have the Mission DNA D1 (2003 model) with labeda Hi-Lo setup and LaBeda Grippers.

Skates are starting to wear and thinking of upgrading...

My options are Mission wicked 5 or Rbk 6k pump. Both are around the same price

-has anyone switched from mission Hi-Lo setup to the reebok Tri-Di setup?

-I'm concerned weight... my current skate weighs 3lbs.. how much does either the wicked5 or rbk 6k weigh?

-Also concerned with comfort as I got the EE(extra wide) size in the missions..my current skates also have leather inside and felt area around the ankle for comfort... no idea what the Wicked5 or Rbk6k is like...

any other comments or suggestions are appreciated....

I have switched from Mission's Vanguard Hi-Lo to the RBK Tri-Di setup, it took me about 15min to get used to it. It just feels a little awkward, once you start skating on them you will know what i'm talking about. Turns and stopping is the thing you feel different right off the bat. Again just takes a little getting used to.

The RBK 6K Pump skates are around 3 pounds... a little lighter.

The 6K has a felt like fabric to wick the moisture away, very soft.

I went from the Mission Wicked 3's to the RBK 6K Pump and i am very happy. I am sad to lose Mission has i am a avid supporter of Mission. The 6K's take almost NO break-in time. The pump supports your ankles and heel. Very comfortable.

I would recommend these skates, or even the newer RBK's as i really like the way they design their skates.

Hope this helps!

im going to be going from last years mission wicked lights to reebok 9k's shortly - i'll be able to tell you better then, but as long as they don't tear my ankles to shreds like the missions did then i'll probably be happy.

Weird I was in your exact same position. Almost same size, also EE coming from Mission hi-lo. I went with RBK 6K's.

Love the skate. The RBK's are much more durable, havnt had a single problem yet.

However I thought the Missions were more moldable to your foot. The RBK skate seems to not want to adjust much. It is comfortable dont get me wrong but I think Ive had skates that fit better before. But its worth the switch because of how pathetically non-durable Mission is.

I dont notice much of a difference with the Hi-lo setup to RBK's frame. It was pretty easy to adjust. I actually had to adjust during a tournament with no practice in between. So Id def. go with the RBK 6K if your lookin for a skate besides Misssion.

and the size... mission's sizing is EQUAL to your shoe size... what size 6k skate should i get with a size 10 shoe size?

again, Missions do NOT run true to shoe. I'm in 9.5-10 in most skate shoes, wear 8.5 in Mission and 8 in CCM/RBK.

The 6K is going to feel great out of the box with the pump. The Wicked 5 is going to run a bit stiffer, and it's noticeable through the quarters of the boot vs the 6K

The Wicked 5 has a nylex pro liner, kind of felt feeling but not as fuzzy. The 6K has the Duratex lining, which is just it's own unique thing. Reminds me of soft cardboard. Can't say definitively that one's better than the other.

Wicked 5 comes with RR Hornets and swiss bearings, 6K with hot shots and abec 7.

Wicked 5 has a 7000 series aluminum chassis, 6K is using the 6061 aluminum which was very easy to strip out (not the bolts, but the actual chassis so the one tool removal was useless since the star shape on the axle had nothing to catch on to) and bend on my old PF6 skates.

Both are going to fit a bit wider through the forefoot and toe box area. The Wicked 5 is going to be the taller of the two boots and it's stiffness runs all the way to the top.

It all depends on your preference, I like stiffer boots as I'm a little bit bigger guy. I have Wicked 5's, and tried the 6K on at length. I was less than impressed with the 6K for it's pricepoint as Mission and Tour both have significantly better values for just a little more money.

Going from a standard Hi-Lo to Tri-Di takes about 5 minutes. Going from a standard Hi-Lo to Vanguard takes about the same amount of time. The Vanguard feels like there's just more oomph in your push with the bigger wheels, the Tri-Di feel pretty balanced but shorter.

The Wicked 5's are a better bang for the buck, but the 6K's are a bit cheaper. They are night and day different in the ankle area since one has the pump and the other is still pretty stiff even though it a mid end offering.

Do you want a stiff, responsive skate that's going to take a bit of work to break in, or do you want to sacrifice some of the stiffness for immediate comfort? The 6K isn't a bad skate, but the pump put it $50 retail over similar skates. It really fits in comparison better with the Wicked 7 and Code Red as they all have similar features, expected player levels, etc.

Only this years model of skates (07) are 1.5 sizes smaller than your shoe size. Other years are your regular shoe size. Dont believe ask Justin.

He's stated multiple times that they have not been true to shoe in several years. In the older models I've been only a size down, but with the wider forefoot area of the last couple of years I go 1.5 sizes down. My '99 Proto VSIs I just got rid of were a 9 and fit like an 8.75 in current Mission lines(not quite as snug as the 8.5, but a tad shorter than 9). My D2's that just went as well were a 9 and fit like current 9's lengthwise.

I just recently got a pair of reebok 6k's in a half size smaller then what I would have been in mission, prior to the 6ks I have had missions, in order (from newest to oldest) they have been: helium 500's, D3's, Proto V's.

Thw stiffness of the 6ks is similer to the D3's from what I remember. The softness of the ankles isn't much to worry about, if they are to hard, just use the pump a bit and the will feel really great.

In my missions I had an EE width and in the reeboks im in a D width, they both feel great to me. Dont let weight worry you too much, as long as the skate fits well the difference between the 3 skates shouldn't matter too much.

I havn't gotten to skate on them properly yet (my local rink is closed till after new years :() but from standing round the house on them, they feel pretty good. No matter which one you get as long as it fits wells will be a great skate I'm sure.

Good luck.

PS: I wanted to get mission wicked 5's as well since every hockey skate until now that I have had have been missions. Unfortunatly they didn't have any mission wickeds (at all) in my size, so it was reeboks for me.

Kevin,

I have skated many, many Mission and RBK skates over the years. I wear a 10 shoe but my foot is probably a 9.75 right and a 9.5 left. In the current Mission's I would wear an 8D.

I switched to RBK a couple of years back and now wear a 7D. Mission's do not fit true to shoe size but the RBK fits about a full size down from a Mission.

I have fit many people from Mission's to RBK's. First, I find many people, at least in Cali, are not fit properly and are already wearing the wrong size skate. If a 10 shoe fits you snug, and you want a snug skate, you are most likely a 7.5 RBK skate. Your toes won't touch the end of the toe box. Remember, after you break the skate in, your heal will slide back about a 1/4 of an inch. If a 10 is a little big on you, try a 7.

In regards to chassis, I agree with previous posts, it will take you about 15 minutes to get used to the Tri-Di.

As far as the boot, every foot is different but I have yet to switch over a player from Mission to RBK and have them not prefer the RBK. It is simply a better built skate.

Good luck!

I don't know if I'd necessarily say better built skate. I think the statement itself is funny for a couple reasons though (not saying you're entirely wrong about people liking RBK out of the box better) People are always clamoring for lighter, stiffer, more comfortable, etc in a skate. The Wicked line delivered on the lighter and stiffer, but they didn't have the out of the box comfort that RBK has. I personally prefer Mission over RBK for three main reasons:

1. Mission's customer service has countless accolades of going above and beyond. Mission has made some duds in the past like any company is going to particularly when they innovate, the first Helium line for example. RBK's customer service is lackluster, and in fairness they are part of a conglomo-corp type company that roller hockey is an afterthought line of business, not their livelyhood.

2. Mission is dedicated to roller hockey. Only Tour gets to claim the same.

3. Mission skates come with better components for the money.

That all being said, feet want what feet want. They don't care what hype, marketing or color scheme is involved. Listen to your feet and you can't go wrong. In the age of skate baking, ankle chamber pumps, instant on everything, etc. people expect their skates to be perfect from the box or after a single bake. If the RBK fits, wear the RBK. If the Mission fits, wear the Mission.

I'm not all that old and I feel like a fogey everytime I think to myself "Did these kids not play hockey before skate bake ovens?" Breaking in new skates used to be half of the fun, if totally justified skating through the house and driving everyone insane with hot, dripping wet socks. Now it's far too much of a nuisance, and RBK has helped that nuisance image by providing instant conformity for your ankles. It sells though, so who am I to question it, right?
