Time to upgrade skates?

Recommended Posts

Play A-B level Adult 2-3 times per week and have Bauer 6500 Supremes from around 2001. Still in good condition and could easily get through a couple more seasons out of them. The 6500's were a Canadian version similar to the 8000's, I believe.

Wanted to know if there is a significant/noticeable improvement in performance to warrant a skate upgrade and get into the XXXX's and enjoy them.....OR should I just wait a few seasons for the technology to get even better.

A few guys on my team love the XXXX's but were upgrading from really old and battered skates.

Thanks in advance!

I'm in the same position. Been skating on 652 Tacks since '02 and they're pretty beat, but I still like them. Probably due for an upgrade, but not shelling out for XXXX's. Might look into XXVs.

At your level and frequency of play, I'd say that the XXXXs would benefit you. But if you're coming over from the Supreme line, be sure to try on a pair of Supreme 70s or One90s, or otherwise wait a couple more months for the new Supreme95 and 75 line to come out. I wouldn't necessarily limit myself to NBH skates either, though.

The XXXX is a great skate...if it fits your foot. The 6500 has a last that is different enough from the XXXX that may warrant you trying them in a wider width if you decide to give them a look.

Keep in mind that with this technology you speak of getting better, and skates performance (supposedly) being improved, durability (definitely) is decreasing. You won't find very many pairs of XXXXs' lasting as long as your 6500's have that's for sure. Keep that in mind!
