Hollows

Recommended Posts

I searched and couldn't find an answer to this question. I have skated at 1/2" my whole life and am begining to find i do not have enough bite and that my blades loose their edge fairly quickly, i skate on vapor XXX's. I have decided to change to a 3/8" hollow, but wanted to know how much this would slow down my glide as i do not want it to be greatly affected. Sorry if this was covered in another thread i couldn't find it.

1. The edges on a 3/8 hollow get worn down faster than 1/2.

2. Perhaps you've gotten bigger and the extra size is wearing down the edges faster.

To me it sounds like there is a problem with who is doing your skates. If you want to try 3/8, then try it and decide for yourself if it's the right hollow. What one person may consider too much reduction in speed, another person may never notice.

It should also be mentioned that the LS steel that comes on those (almost positive it does) tends to not hold an edge as long as other steel.

i've also heard that and i think that thats the problem i tried 3/8 tonight and liked it, but i'll see how it holds up. When i had 1/2 after 2 skates they were loosing bite.

Or you can go in between with a 7/16 and have the best of both.

I concur with the 7/16" hollow -- perfect hollow for a lot of skaters like me for whom after 1-2 games the 1/2" just doesn't quite cut it, so to speak. I'm surprised your LHS didn't recommend that to you before going all the way to 3/8" (or maybe you didn't ask). Try it out next time.
