oggy_3 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 I've herd the leage is quite decent, comparable to the Maritime Junior A league with more scouting. Also noticed they have two teams in the top 15 of Canada, 11.Portage Terriors(was 5th last week) and 13.Winnipeg Saints(was 14th last week). oggy_3 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 From what my coach tells me it goes AJHL, BCHL, CJHL, and then Martime and Manitoba league fairly close, OPJHL but with the OP is it is fairly wide open league you have the 6 or 7 good teams but then the rest of the teams are quite weak, Superior and Northern are the weaker leagues. BigDipper 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 As a former player of the OP, the MJ and the former METRO jr.a league (now merged with the op) I wouldn't go so far as to "rank" them. But yeah some are defintely better than other's. Ontario tends to cater more to younger plyers but since they have 4 thousand teams, it has gotten water down over the past several years. Some club's have good foundations where others just scrounge by. The MJ has a general focus on "older" players which makes for a more competitive league, but can also lack in other areas too such as scouting. With every league you always have one of three things. players who are looking for NCAA, players that have played major junior and got sent down, and players that are playing just to play. Western canadian leagues produce a high amount of NCAA players as they have more players looking for that avenue than other leagues. Go further east and most have used up their eligibility by now and are just winding out thier junior leagues. Also when i went to a MJAHL training camp i think there were 4 guys who had been not good enough for the Q as a 20 year old or made it one year but couldn't the next. Also said that the CJHL was one of the best scouted and it is just located in the Ottawa Area, so not to much traveling compared to other leagues. When i asked him about the Quebec league, he kind of just looked at me, asked how well i spoke french and then just said go Maritime, CJHL or OPJHL. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

tips09 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2008 From what i know and hear the 2 top leagues are BCHL and The AJHL ( that is definately debateable though). I got a relative who coaches in the MJHL and from what I hear it is more of the classic junior league with quite a few older guys with lots of crazy local fans (hence the low attendance numbers). So that league can definately cater to certain peoples games and people who enjoy that kind of old"er" time hockey. Thats just the feeling i get of it. I live near a town with a SJHL team and they regularly get around 700- 1100 fans out each game. All leagues would be comparable as their are guys from Quebec, alberta, B.C. and many other provinces that play here alone. I also know of other people who have gone out of province to play. This league is a good alternative to the WHL, OHL, QMJHL etc. for someone wanting to get a scholarship as these players keep their college eligibility. Honestly start contacting some teams within the next month, seeing how their roster is looking for next year...who they're losing, who's coming back, so on and so forth. Get a feel for where you have to go. And research the teams too. Coaches history, town, management. Better to go in there with eyes open than your eyes closed. Cole13 0 Report post Posted January 24, 2008 yeah the mjhl and the sjhl (saskatchewan) are very close in talent and at the end of the yr when the winners from both leagues play in the anavet cup (winner goes to royal bank cup) it is always a good series, last yr the Selkirk Steelers and the Humboldt Broncos went to seven games and played four 20 min. overtime periods before the steelers cam out on top... great hockey Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
