Need Skate Advice

Recommended Posts

I need advice on upgrading my skates.

I currently have a pair of Eason Synergy in 2EE sz 7.5. I don't know what model they are, but I think they are middle of the road skates. They have 777 Comp on the back.

My feet are completely flat and are very wide. The Eastons I have hurt my feet because I feel a lot of pressure on the sides of my feet, mostly in the middle sides. I tend to not lace up my skates fully because of the pain. I have a pair of superfeet footbeds in them too.

So, I'm really looking for more comfortable skates. My shoe size is 9.5 My budget is pretty much limitless because I will be playing competitive hockey.

What brands and models do you suggest? I have a few hockey boutiques here who carry a few higher end skates. I may have to resort to taking "my best shot" and ordering a pair online if local stores don't work out. Thanks guys.

Yes they have some Grafs. Would you happen to know which may fit my feet the best?

Try visiting Grafcanada.com...they give a brief description of the type of foot each skate fits...I'll look for a site I found that describes the number codes and get back to you if I find it.Link

Take what this guy says with a grain of salt, but it seems he's pretty accurate in describing Grafs in this article.

graf makes a skate to fit every foot and can make a custom skate if ne does not. you can get evry model in a wide width but depends on the depth of the foot. if you have flat feet it would work better if you change out the footbeds and or take the cobra steel and holders and put tuuks on. tuuk makes a better prduct anyway. i have been wearing grafs for a wile and always use the tuuk holder. graf has 2 main modles you going to want to look at the 7 and g series. 7 series is 369 buck and g series is 549. the difference is the 7 eries is all leather witht he downfall tht if fills up with water. the g series is all carbon, a little stiffer, and does not fill with water. try on the 705, 705,g35, g5. see which one feels better. any questions and you can feel free to ask.

Thanks for the replies. I will try on some Grafs tomorrow. The store I will be going to only has the 705 and 709 so I will give those a shot. Tuuks are the plastic chasse thing with the blade attached to it right? How much do they cost if I want to put tuuks on?

Probably 80 bucks including installation...Tuuks are the blade holders...and the store will order them for you with steel. Try skating on the Cobra holders first if you do decide to go with Grafs...they aren't hard to get used to and you can have the steel profiled to put you at a more neutral pitch like Tuuks with your purchase for free.

How does changing the cobra blade holder over to tuuks do anything to relieve the pains of having flat feet?

I wouldn't say the tuuks are a better product either. . . . isn't it all personal preference?

The steel on cobra's does suck though, no argument there

I agree Tuuk holders are great holders but I wouldn't necessarily say they are better than the Graf Cobra holder. And I concurr they won't do anything for foot pain, that's a boot issue. I would go with the Cobras for now and save the $80. Graf is an expensive but good skate and there's no use spending more than you have to. Myself I've only ever broken one holder all my life playing the game and that was off a screaming slapshot that knocked me on my fannie years back. Most of the time I stuck with the holder the skate comes with and have had no problems. If you want to try changing the holder later on it'll be easier on the pocket book. Get the skates paid for first then you can do modifications to your satisfaction later, there's no rush.

Do you think the Vector 10. SE or the One90 skates could fit me?

If you have flatter, wider feet I would saty far away from the Vectors - you have more of a Tack / RBK foot, by the sounds of things. I couldn't say with the Bauer - I have no experience with them - the newer model (if it's even out yet) is supposed to be shaped like an 8090 Supreme, which might fit the bill for you.
