Swedish Elite League on Canadian TV

Recommended Posts

I read today on MoDo Hockey's official site that the Swedish Elite League will now be broadcasted in Canada, on the network Rogers Sportsnet. There will be one or two games a week (it didn't say if they're live or not though).

In case of a lockout there will be many NHL players in the league, but even if there isn't a lockout it's nice that you guys can watch it for something different, who knows, maybe you'll even like what you see? ;)

That is nice, I always enjoy watching that league when it's available during the Spengler Cup.

Swedish teams don't participate in the spengler cup.

If they wanted to show european hockey full of NHL players they should brodcast russian league games.

Oh maybe. But now, unless I'm mistaken, teams from Sweden and Finland do not get time off during the Spengler Cup. With the exception of one team from Finland. Most other european leagues get a break during this time. That's also a reason why team Canada, which participates in the Spengler Cup is full of Canadians playing in the Swiss league, rather then Sweden and Finland. Most leagues get time off during the Deutschland Cup, Spengler Cup, and Swedish Games.

A couple Swedish teams (Färjestad and apparently Leksand too although I don't remember that myself) have played in the Spengler Cup in the past, back then there was a "Christmas break" in the league, but a few years ago they removed that break, so that's probably why they don't have any teams there anymore. There are however short breaks for the Karjala Cup (Finland), Baltica Cup (Russia) and Sweden Hockey Games, but those tournaments are for the national teams and not club teams.

There is always a German team on the Spengler Cup and we do not have a Christmas break for the season. While the German team plays the Spengler cup, the German league continues. The participating team has to catch up the 2 or 3 games they missed.

As for the nationality of the teams participating in the Spengler cup: It all depends on the Davos organisation. They INVITE teams to the Spengler Cup so it may be a Finnish team one year and a Swedish team the next (not to forget that often a team just turns down the offer to play the cup so they have to invite someone else).

That's cool I had heard rumours of some sort of deal was brewing. I'll be able do watch Peter Forsberg if he goes to Modo that so cool. Also did you go back to the Modo training camp? If so did Forsberg skate this week or did he sit out longer than expected.

I haven't been back to watch more practices but I've heard that he's back, he sat out from last Friday through last Sunday for a total of three days, then he was back. So it was probably just a safety measure, he felt something bothering him but nothing serious. Hopefully he'll be fine in time for the WC. :)
