help me find skates

Recommended Posts

i came from old 652 tacks which felt amazing. i dont know if they were originally fitted correctly or not, but they're so broken-in (probably 6-7 years?) that they fit perfectly. my new 892 tacks dont feel right at all. they feel a bit narrow (mid-foot, especially the right), and there's a ton of pressure on the front of my ankle at the top lace. they also provide basically no lateral support at the top of the boot.

money IS a factor, but i'd be willing to buy even the most expensive skates if i could be convinced that i'll finally feel at home in my skates again. i'm 6'0 160 lbs, 23 years old, and i've been playing hockey for 20, but i dont know much about skate fitting.

please help! thanks a lot!

wow thats almost my story to a T I wore 652 tacks for years then i went to a 492 tacks which i only wore for about 2 years.. I picked up some 952 kevlars andtheywere TIGHT and theyhurt especially the right skate....

first I took 2 HUGE screwdrivers and used those to flex the side of the boot outward a bit... i then found some directions online on how to bake the skates at home using your own oven.... basically all your doing is softening the inner padding so it can mold to your feet better....

doing this has dramatically improved the feel of these skates and I finally can use them again without being in pain... with the CCM tacks I was told that the higher the number, the stiffer the boot making breaking them in a little harder and morepainful.... espescially the 952 kevlar which is a VERY stiff boot...

I would try the stretching and baking first before you jump ship and buy new skates...

good luck

i should have mentioned that i already had these baked and punched to relieve pressure points, plus skated in them maybe 10 times, but they're still terrible. they're size 8.5d. the heel actually feels great in the CCMs... snug and comfy. probably the only part of the fit i'm happy with.

would it be worth trying NBH or Graf skates? i was also thinking about KOR shift 1... maybe thet'll conform better? i havent seen the old 652's anywhere. that's what i was looking for first. they're really old. probably like 2000 or 2001 models?

Ive actually ordered from this site before... they have the 652's

http://sportsplus4-store.stores.yahoo.net/ccmsuptacsen.html

its all about the comfort... if your comfortable in the boot then its right for you....

thanks, i've seen those around... the ones i came from were way older than that... i think at this point i'd only buy another pair of tacks if they're the exact ones i came from, since i got what i thought would be a slightly stiffer and more modern edition of my old skates, but they're vastly different.

hockeyworld.com has the 652s they have the 98-99 version as well as the 2001 version.. not sure what size you wear but hey... they have them

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH they have them, but not in my size!!!!!!!!!! that's so frustrating! it's the 1999/2000 model. the 2001 model looks exactly the same, but they dont have my size there either. i'd wet myself if i could find a new pair of those in 8.5D! i have a feeling i'm going to have to find a pair of modern skates that fit me well. so far my list to try on includes:

-Graf G9, 709, and G70

-RBK (anyone have a specific suggestion?)

-Easton (anyone have a specific suggestion?)

I can tell you that when I needed to replace my 652s I went lower to the 452's and in my opinion there is no difference in the boot... the 452 and the 652 are both a soft comfortable boot.... when you go higher the stiffer the boots get... I have 952s now that I went down a half size and its taken alot to get them to fit comfortably.....

if you cant find the 652s consider the 452s ....
