Wiping out during quick turns... or nearly

Recommended Posts

Been skating on hilo's since 2001, and even tried other types (sprungs, vanguards, sensor). Most of the surfaces that I've played on were smooth, rough or painted cement.

Started playing in the league last year on sportcourt, and everytime i start to go full speed into turns, i feel like I'm going to wipeout... especially during crossovers. I usually warm up for about 5 mins by skating around and I dont have any problems then, but during the game my skating starts to get affected.

Anythign I should be trying different? back to vanguards?

already using pretty soft wheels. I'm 6ft tall, 215lbs, and have blown thru about 2 sets of RR MB816 in the last 2 months.

Most probably switching back to normal bearings...

Yeah try the standard bearings, my friend blows through the micro-bearings like nothing. And hes about your size.

The micro bearings are light, but I don't think they hold up quite well.

Could be the sweat... but I've previously tried to plug up the holes as much as possible

The micro bearings are still in great shape, spins forever. Its the wheels that keep chunking. I've already decided to switch to some hornets or hotshots. my team mates use those, and they have no probs (or maybe they dont skate hard enough ;) )

Since you said your already wearing soft wheels try bending your knees more to put your center of gravity closer to the floor.

It sounds like a wheel problem to me. When my wheels start to break down I notice this problem. I would try the Hornets out or maybe go for a different wheel, Revision Variant, Labeda Dynasty, etc.

I would go standard hub as well. My concept is that the mb816 hub is a lot of plastic and make the wheel have less "bend" than a standard hub that has less of a hub (plastic) and therefore more flexlible.

open your legs more and try to put more weight on the inside leg when turning. if you find your inside leg almost lifting off then when turning then your not turning right. remember to have your inside foot ahead of your outside foot and lean into the turn with your inside foot.

I read that you warm up and have no problems but when you're playing it becomes a problem, is this on and off the puck? I was wandering whether when with a puck your centre of gravity is changed a little?

actually, i kinda figured out one of the reasons I've been losing 'grip' during the game. After last night's game, i realised that there was a huge buildup of dust on the wheels... game organisers have been pretty slack and coming late to open up the rink, and have only got about 15 min before game starts. I doubt that she (an attractive she) uses the stuff to clear up the dust that would have accumulated over the days.

Was skating with vangaurds last night, skating forwards was ok. Backwards needed a little adjustment... 3rd period feet went to sleep due to the tightened skates. Will work on that for the next game. 1G 2A, not bad for the first time on those skates.
