Avs vs. Wild game 2 stick incident

I'm confused as to what happened here...

Basically Jeff Finger's stick got flung INTO the crowd and during the same shift Forsberg scored. Then the ref brought over a stick from the Avs and traded it with the fan for the original stick that got tossed out of play...

I didn't quite get it...
