wildebeest 0 Report post Posted May 25, 2008 So I finally joined the 21st century the other day and picked up a new 720p/1080i LCD from vizio.Unfortunately, I still play DVDs through my Playstation 2 like a 14 year-old.In my looking around, I've noticed that most places have upscaling DVD players for $40-$50 bucks. Gooch 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2008 I've got a really cheap Insignia DVD player that replaced my PS2 [college student not a 14 year old ;) ] It's not upscaling, it is extremely basic, but it gets the job done. It's great because the majority of my DVDs are burned and it will play any and all types of media...it's not picky on certain brands or types of discs, but I don't know if that's a factor for you. We thought we were having problems with our projector, which we were mostly using to watch DVD's, since DirecTV's DVR wasn't working consistently. However, one night we got the DVR to work and noticed the picture was fine. After a little research, we decided to buy an upscaling DVD player and haven't had problems since. So in my application, it seems like the upscaling DVD player has helped while sending the output through HDMI, although it's possible it won't make any difference in your application.By the way, I noticed a Blu-Ray display at Best Buy today. Wow, those are noticeably better than regular DVD's. Once the player drops to the $200 range, I'll be all over it! Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Once the player drops to the $200 range, I'll be all over it!Hang on a minute. Best Buy deliberately screws the signal coming out of the regular DVD to make it look bad in those setups. They use component cables for the DVD and HDMI for the Blu-Ray. If you use HDMI for both, you pretty much have to go bigger than 42" to see much of a difference, IMO. If you have to buy a new DVD player, what the heck get the Blu-Ray because it will play your old DVDs too, but I wouldn't run out and buy a Blu-Ray unless I had a big TV. wildebeest 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2008 Yeah, I want a PS3, so I'll go new-school 14 year old and use it for a Blu-Ray player. I'm also entertaining the idea of picking up a Mac Mini for digital movie applications. I currently have my OOOLLLDD powermac G4 hooked up to the VGA in and the DVD player does a pretty good job, but it's super choppy when Quicktime tries to do anything over 480p.I guess I can just use the Mini when I get it for hot nasty DVD action.
