NHL Cap Rises again

Recommended Posts

Ok, now we're well above the point where a lot of teams were losing money when they forced the lockout. There is no way the NHL can continue this way and they will have to make changes to the way money is distributed. A couple years ago it was Canadian teams that were having problems, with the exchange rate even, the problem is now with some of the smaller or newer markets in the US. Another lockout will make it even more difficult to grow hockey in those smaller markets.

But isn't the Cap based on League revenue. So, a higher Cap means a "healthy" League, doesn't it?

The Devils got a new building and made more money, does that make the other 29 teams healthier? It only means some teams are making more money. There is no distribution of the increased revenues, so the big market teams make a lot more while the smaller market teams make about the same.

I thought the CBA had a provision for Revenue sharing (of some kind).

Check page 147 of the CBA, for some reason I can't copy and paste out of the version I found.

A team would have to have revenues growing faster than the league average and sell at least 14k or 80% of thier tickets per game. Oh and they have to have a payroll below the target team payroll (mid point of cap to floor) in order to qualify.

I doubt any team will qualify.
