blade holder height

Recommended Posts

I posted within a topic a few weeks ago and received very little feedback so I'm trying this again.

I've got tuuk custom +'s on my mega air90's (i'm coming from graf 707's). The forefoot/outsole on the air90's is a bit wider than my grafs, and when i do hard turns, the outsole hits the ice and i'm falling on my arse. I'd like to know what I can do to fix this problem.

Are pitch holders taller than Tuuk Custom+ holders? I understand that LS2's are taller, and that it could alleviate the problem, but I don't want to drill new holes if I don't have to.

Thanks for the help.

i dont think its your outsole touching

but if it is thats pretty impresive

Unfortunately it is the outsole touching the ice.

It is worn where it is hitting the ice. (you can see it between the 3rd and 4th rivets)

I take it you don't have any solutions to my dilemma?

I swapped out the C+ for Pitch holders a while back, and I didn't notice much of a difference. The Pitch holders may be a little bit shorter, but the steel is much better than my C+ steel. I had the same problem making hard pivots, I'd touch the outsole and down I'd go. With the Pitch steel, I feel like I get a better bite, and if I touch the boot to the ice, I can usually keep the edge. Is the ice pretty soft at your rink? I went from my home rink (very very soft) to a junior's rink (much colder, harder) and found I could touch outsole without a problem. Hope that helps out a little bit...

Yea, my rink has pretty soft ice, so that may add to the problem. I wonder if putting lifts on my skates (front and rear) would raise the skate a bit, therefore making my boot less likely to hit the ice due to a larger angle from edge to outsole.

Does anyone have exact height measurements of the tuuk custom vs. the pitch? maybe JR?

yeah you could put lifts in the front and back - it's not that uncommon to see pro stock skates with them added that way. i'd imagine any decent shop would be able to take care of that for you. just need a rivet press and the lifts themselves, or something to make them out of.

C+ and PITCH are the same height.

Yes, you can put lifts under BOTH towers and that will prevent that from happening.

Awesome. . . that's the help I was looking for.

Now I'll begin searching for what type of material I'm supposed to use to make some lifts.

Also, any idea how much of a lift will be needed. I guess it varies for each person. . . maybe a rough estimate?

I remember when some guys on my team had the old CCM 652, they shaved down the outside edges on the outsole. It may hurt the skate though but if it´s done with care it can help a bit.

I can sell you material, but I can't cut or install. It's actually really simple once you have the holders pulled.

Scratch that, I could probably do it. You;'d have to ship down the skates.

I actually just got a job at a LHS so I can probably do the install on my own now, I just need the lifts.

edit: do you think shaving the sides down a bit like sweed said would also benefit?

It's obviously impeding you when you turn, shaving it won't eliminate it as lifts will.

Well, in that case, I can sell you the material and tell you how to do it.
