Graf Ultra Series

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

After 2 years of use, my one90s look like they will be calling it quits not too long from now so I am starting to look at getting a new pair of skates. Recently I was steered in the direction of Graf skates and I'm interested in the Ultra G series.

I've been on this forum long enough to know that people are split on Graf (I'm a little weary on their QC issues)...and just to make sure I searched again but haven't found any long term reviews on the Ultra G series. If there are any Ultra G users out there I'd like to hear from you! And if you can make a suggestion at which model to look at I'd like to know. Here are my specs:

What I like about the One90 (I use D width):

-Fit of one90 was pretty good. Able to get nice heel lock on both feet.

-Very responsive

-Low cut (I still skate with the top eyelet undone)

-Light (it's an added bonus but weight isn't a big deal for me)

What I didn't like about the One90:

-there doesn't seem to be alot of padding. It was very protective though.

-I prefer a slightly softer boot.

-It's a bit too shallow for my left foot. My left inside bone is way too close to the eyelets (although I use superfeet insole) thus making it sore and lead to more bauer bumps.

Any help would be great! One my LHS stocks all the graf models so I'm going to check them out when my one90s call it quits.

ive had my Ultra G3's since December 2007, and not too many complaints

replaced the cobra holders and steel with the tuuk lightspeeds, definitely a major necessity for me, your prior experience on skates will dictate what you like/prefer...

stock steel on the cobras ( i believe all of the ultra series' come with the ultra5000 holder) was not very good, didn't hold an edge very long, patchy rust marks no matter how i dried/stored them

the fit of the G3's is perfect for me, and as you know Graf has a boot for virtually everyone, try them all on since you have been blessed with a 100% fully stocked LHS. take advantage of that.

the carbon (composite?) boot is still extremely stiff, no major breakdown; only minor cosmetic cuts and scratches.

the mesh interior is something ive grown to love, but it was a little different feeling from all the bauer skates i had worn during minor hockey days.

the thickness of the tongue on these skates is something ridiculous, lace bite has never been an issue and i cant imagine it ever will be

to answer your main question, no real breakdown issues with the boot other than normal wear and tear issues, but again nine months is nothing near what i expect for these skates to last but they seem to be doing very well.

goodluck on your search Andoy!

I'd suspect that the g3 or g35s would fit you the best if one90's fit well. . .

I too am in the same situation as you. Soon I will be ordering a pair of g7's, but I'm very skeptical about the quality of the skate. I was looking at a pair at my LHS the other day and the holders where misaligned, & outsoles looked partially separated from the boots

I'm hoping it was just a lemon. I'd say thoroughly inspect the skate you are going to purchase before you buy it, so you don't get one from the bad batch.

Thanks for the quick replies guys! I'm very lucky my LHS stocks different models so I can try them out as well as see the quality of the skates when the time comes.

In terms of stiffness does anyone how know the ultras compare to the one90s? The reason why I am looking at Grafs is because they supposedly allow for more ankle movement and are not as stiff as most skates out in the market today (even ultras are supposedly considerably less stiff).

i cant speak for the one90s as the ultras are my first 'top of the liners' but from information gathered on MSH the Cobra holder on grafs are one of if not the stiffest holder available on skates. I assume your one90s had the Zytel LSP holders and the general consensus is that TUUK holders flex more than Cobras (not 100% sure on the Zytel's effect on flex/stiffness)

the boot however is very stiff from what i have held and compared in my LHS, i'd say less than the one95 but i would definitely still deem it "very rigid"

hope this helps
