Moving into One90 Junior Skate from Senior Sizes

Recommended Posts

I'm being told that the One90's run 1/2 size smaller than normal Bauer/Nike Sizing.

Like if I wear a 6 in Bauer 8000's, I should be wearing a 5.5 in One90's.

Anyone else found this to be true?

I tried on the 5.5 and it felt okay....but I'm a little worried about moving into a junior skate. I couldn't see any noticeable difference between the senior and the junior construction....they both seem like top of line skates.

They're just for an adult rec hockey league. I'm 5'09" and weight about 175.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi I'm wearing a size 7.5 shoe and I wear a size 5.5EE in a Bauer One95 fine, but if there's something that I did notice when trying the size 6 senior vs 5.5 junior was a pretty big change in volume between the two boots. So maybe if you don't find a change in volume then it's no big deal. It really depends on if you are feathering the toe cap when you are standing straight legged and not touch the end of the toe cap if you bend your knees. Most importantly your preference for comfort.

The constant advice I'm always told is you can always stretch your boots longer but you can't make them shorter, so keep that in mind.

I'm in the same situation. 7.5 shoe and can fit in a 5.5EE. I'm just concerned that the junior skate won't be able to handle the wear and tear of an adult. Can the junior skate handle a slap shot of adult player? I have the opportunity to grab a pair of new Jr. One95 for $375CAN. I'm just hesitant to grab them. If not then i grab a pair of Sr. Vapor XXVs for the almost the same price.

There's got to be a reason junior skates are priced significantly lower than the senior-sized version. My thinking is that an adult should definitely be wary of a junior skate because the weight difference between a child and an adult is so great. One would think that creates a lot more stress than a junior boot is designed to handle. I know running shoes are developed in the same fashion, so there's a good chance that moving to the junior skate will result in sacrifices in stiffness and durability just as running shoes show major differences in cushioning and support.

I disagree. I'm wearing a pair of junior 9k. I weigh about 150 lbs and these skates perform amazing. I've put 1.5 seasons on them and they still look almost brand new.

Yup, longer and wider. Its amazing the difference it can make.

You are absolutely right, the volume change is amazing. I wear a Mission Jr 5.5 skate (albiet a pair of inlines). I wouldnt have thought that the extra 0.5 size would make such a difference, but my feet swim in a pair of 6s to the point where it would be unskatable.

Ive had a few fit issues with my skates. They werent wide enough (I have a borderline wide foot) and the ankle pockets were lower than my ankle bones. Im assuming the ankle issue is because Im putting an adult foot into a junior skate.

Krog7d7, just make sure the Jr skate is wide enough to accomodate your foot (or close enough that strething will get you there). Narrow skates really mess with your balance.

As for the price difference, kids feet grows a lot, I dont think parents would enjoy paying adult prices for their little darling whose feet grows faster than it takes for the skates to need replacing.

I have read that the boot is not as stiff in kids versions, but that is forum hearsay, so I dont put much stock in it. It may be true, it may not be.

In the end, skates either fit or they dont and skating in skates that are too big sucks. So what else can you do (aside from buy custom made skates)?

Well for what it's worth, my LHS the said the only difference between the size 5.5 and 6 is just that, the size and fit (volume). Furthermore, they didn't recommend I jump to a 6 because they didn't think there was any sacrifice in the stiffness and durability with the change. From my experience there wasn't any change in stiffness between the two sizes when i tried on the 5.5 vs 6. The only difference was the size and fit (volume) as I mentioned before. Again, try them on and see which one feels more comfortable and go with that. Don't let the price difference affect your judgment and force yourself into the 5.5 if they don't fit as well as a 6.

I'm just concerned that the junior skate won't be able to handle the wear and tear of an adult. Can the junior skate handle a slap shot of adult player?

I just recently took a really hard slap shot (this guy got everything into it) off the ankle of my One95's on Saturday and they are still holding strong. I'm really glad I had my One95's on to protect me on this shot as I probably would have broken my ankle with my old skates. The shot was so hard that it not only bruised my inside ankle but it also gave me two cuts there as well. Luckily, no major damage.

So I don't think you have anything to worry about in terms of the junior One95 skate being able to handle a slap shot of an adult player.

In terms of durability, I really don't have an answer for you now as these skates just hit the market.
