My son's 1st Beer League Game - at 13?

Recommended Posts

We were at practice last night and a bunch of guys from a 30+ Alumni league were watching before their game. When we were done I started to take my son's pads and stick to the car when his coach came up and said "Matt needs his stuff, he's playing in the next game". Turns out one of the goalies called at the last minute and couldn't make it. He won't be 14 till next month, but he's a big kid (5'8"/170) and plays inline goalie against 17/18 yr olds. I said "are you sure about this" and he gave me that usual teenage blank stare and said "about what?" and off he went.

I was told there was a mix of levels out there with some ex-juniors and ex-college players . I know that one of them played for Michigan with Mike Cammalleri and Josh Langfeld. I think they were taking it a little easy at first, but after a couple of saves they soon forgot he was a kid. Anyway, he faced 22 shots and they lost 3-2. One was a fluke goal from behind off a skate and the other 2 were breakaways. He came off the rink with a stupid grin, raised his stick and went off to the locker room with the guys. That was the best part of the night. Second best part? I got to drink his beer...;)

Of course on the way home he said "You know dad... I should have stopped that first breakaway..."

That's a cool story, and you are a cool dad for allowing him to play.

My Dad used to take me out with his buddies in their summer pickup games once I got close to the same level as them, pace wise, when i was a young buck.

When I invited many of my buddies to come with me often times their parents said no.

And yes, I believe my first ever beer, that wasn't stolen or sneaked, was with my Dad after one of those skates, and long long before I was 19 :D I think he said "Don't tell your Mom" ;)

congratulations! .... er, I mean to your son, not to you for taking his beer!

Good example of parents knowing the boundaries... i know asian parents would whisk their offspring off straight away.

dude... i can say it cause I'm asian. Happens to me, happens to a lot of the asian parents who I know wouldnt let their precious kids partake in contact sports because its too dangerous.

I'm not taking a stab at someone else's culture, I've gone thru it myself wishing my parents would allow me more chances to play sports instead of studying all the time.

If I offended you in some way, then I apologise... I'd better tell Russel Peters to stop the racist asian jokes as well... :)

Stop being a self-righteous PC douchebag. I am Asian, and I know exactly what fatwabbit meant. Traditional Asian parents for the most part prioritize school and education over sports, especially a dangerous and "barbaric" sport such as hockey. Nothing wrong with that, different cultures value some things over others. Of course, there are exceptions. People that are born here are more assimilated to the local culture, and therefore would be more open minded and willing to let their kids play hockey.

Anyway, back on the topic, I used to play for my coach's beer league roller team when I was 14. On one hand it was easy because I was much faster than all the other guys, on the other hand it was hard because they played really chippy, and almost everyone outweighed me by almost double.

see, you should have said THAT instead of a broad generalization that makes you look like a jerk

...and you should stop jumping to conclusions and slinging insults, making yourself look like a jerk.
