Helmet Foam Liner Types

Recommended Posts

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each type and which is EPS & EPP & VN (hard and soft foams)? What's the difference between the gray and yellow soft foams? I was under the impression that the hard foam type is more durable and last longer but I've read a few times that upon a major impact it should be replaced. If that's true what constitutes a major impact? How often should each type really be replaced and do the expiration dates on newer helmets really mean anything? Which type offers the best protection?

Thanks for your replies.

The thread Devilsfan posted is pretty good for answering all your questions. I have had both EPP and VN and to me VN is much more comfortable. I'll never go back to EPP. Just by looking at Center Ice I'd say most Pro players use VN. Both provide accepted ( certified) levels of protection and unless you have concussion issues I would go with the most comfortable for you. Matt Cullen of the Hurricanes has had concussion issues and he wears a Easton S8 with VN.

EPP is good until one soild impact, once it cracks it's not good to use anymore. VN can take multiple impacts, but over time it becomes hard and loses its impact-absorbing qualities.
