Cobra 5000 vs Tuuk LS2 / LS Power Advice

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys.. Hopefully somebody can help me with this as there seems to be lots of knowledge on the board above what I have.

I am currently wearing Pro Custom Graf G35's (Felt Tongues, wide front, narrow heal, XX-Stiff, Left is 9.75, Right is 9.5) and presently have the Cobra/Graf Ultra 5000 Holders and Blades on my skates. I love my Graf skates and would never think of changing. I like the look of the skates as well as I referee pro and Major Junior hockey. I get them custom made through the pro rep at training camp and I am due for a new pair for next season.

As far as the holders go I am a fan of the forward positioning the crobra holders put the skates in, but with the recent replacement of the bolts holding the blades in for the 3rd or 4th time in the past couple years I was looking at getting my Grafs done next season with Tuuk Holders on them.

The qusetion I am getting to is the comparison...

What Tuuk Holder is the most forward pitched like the Cobra holders ?

Is the Tuuk LS Power the closest for radius ?

What would you guys recommend for me ? Someone who likes the forward pitch and at 6'1 210lbs and more of a bull-legged power stride, but looking for a Tuuk Holder to fit that..

1) The LS2 is the most forward pitched, though not that much. The TUUK/C/C+ is pretty heel pitched, so mostlikely stay clear (unless you like the give of these holders, not nearly as stiff as the others).

2) Stay away from the LSPower. Holder cracks, gives out, horrible. If you like the extra length of the steel go with the LS2.1 holder.

3) You sound similar to me. I had my Ultra G3s mounted with LS2, 3mm heel lifts (matching profile of the old Cobra 5000s that were on there), and was very happy with the setup. Next to no adjustment time since the pitch was just about perfectly matched to what I was used to.

edit: I'd say welcome to the board, but you've been here since '04 producing a whopping post per year and a half .

Thanks for the welcome.. when you guys start talking about referee gear I will chime in a bit more ! lol..

All I get new is skates every year and a half and about 3-4 Helmets every year from the different leagues I work. Although I get a few good freebies in getting in tight with Equipment Managers. All my pants, gloves and sticks I have got for free from Equipment Managers although I don't get to play as much as I wish I could.

Is the LS Power like an oversized runner ? Like putting 288's on my skates instead of 280's ? Or is it like a middle ground or a longer radius ?

I would rather something stiffer.. give is not really good with my skating style/size. That's what I find that the Cobra Holders are not as stiff.

LS2 vs LS 2.1.. are they a complete different setup.. or is it just a a different radius

LSP has longer steel in it, allowing more steel to be in contact with the ice, great for straight speed but detracting from agility.

LS2 is the standard LS holder with standard LS steel.

LS2.1 is the standard LS holder that has been "modified" to accept LSP (longer) steel.

LS2.1 = LSP holder except without the horrible material that LSP is made out of.

LSP is now discontinued and hard to find/find parts for.

Thanks.. will have to try and compare the steel length in comparison to my Cobras then...I get my skates profiled by an equipment manager so not too worried about radius.

I will most likely go to an Equipment Manager. I let only 3 or 4 guys touch my skates and they are all equipment managers. The team in my city has one of the best in the league and I trust him with everything to do with my skates.

When I last saw the Graf Pro Rep, he said I would probably need a couple alignment tweeks and he said they at Graf would do some adjustments for me and probably drill the holes, but they will not actually rivet the Tuuk holders onto the boot. So basically until I talk to him at training camp to get re-fitted I won't know for sure.

Wrong. 2.1 is just steel that can be accepted in any LS2 holder, there is no larger holder after the LSP was discontinued.

Stripes, I forgot to ask, how often do you sharpen your skates? Do you only allow those 3 or 4 guys do your sharpening? Thanks for your replies...

I usually get mine sharpened once a week.. usually at 3/8" but lately have tested moving down to a 1/2". Really depends where I am working the following week.. If mainly pro/major junior I will stick to a 1/2" but if it's Tier II, Senior, University - anything with a cooler rink and harder ice I will go with a 3/8"

And yes, those 3 or 4 guys have been the only ones I let sharpen my skates barring needing an emergency sharpening mid game. They are all trained Maximum Edge guys.
