Skating with your head down

Recommended Posts

If none of the above works, attach a rope to a claw on one end and a clamp on the other. Now, attach the clamp to the back of your helmet and the claw between your legs. Go practice stick handling... :o

How do you fix it? Skate around with your head down enough, and after a few concusions you will remember to not do that again, OR just quit the game. Darwin at work.

I had this problem after getting back into hockey after a 6 year break. I fixed it by going to pick up hockey and just forcing myself to keep my head up. It took a while to get used to keeping it up in a game session....but just stay calm and realize you have PLENTY of time with the puck. My biggest problem wasnt my skating...it was my puck control. I spent a lot of time stickhandling around not looking at my hands until I got more comfortable...just spend time practicing your puck control.

I notice my head starts to go down when I'm about 10ft from the other teams net. The rest of the time I'm all fine and dandy. Don't rush the puck very patient and heads up in neutral zone to own end.

It's usually a good idea to look down for a second before you shoot or make a fancy move, but only briefly. I often have that problem when I'm about to shoot, I look down for a moment to long and let the goalie position himself by the time I look back up.

I think that is a common thing that most players do. I am lucky in that I dont have to look down before shooting and I will normally always stare at the corner where I am not gonna shoot before letting it go to the opposite side or everyones favourite hard and right along the ice.

Practice against the boards shooting and catches passes without looking at your stick, always helped me get the rhythm of it back

In warm up I have no problem, on break aways I'm fine. Its just when I'm trying to dangle through players and shooting right after. I never use to have that problem, but I stopped playing for a few years. Now it seems like I have lost my dangle to shot ability.

The key is DON'T TRY TO DANGLE. Try to properly stick handle, e.g. skate with the puck out in front of you, use split vision, attack with speed when possible and push it up on the backhand properly when moving up ice by yourself. I've noticed guys that strictly make moves with their hands suffer from this. Good stickhandling is a mix of feet/agility/speed and hands.

I found that I can see the puck all time, with my head up, when I seat deeper on skates. I watch on opposite, but the puck is still in the peripheral vision area.
