Growing up in SoCal before Gretzky came to town, you never even heard of hockey if you were a typical kid. You either played baseball, Pop Warner football, or AYSO soccor. The only place that gets you anything is in music - and even then, you've got to be a certain kind of marketable child prodigy to keep booking shows past your early teens, when the novelty of youth wears off.In hockey, it's even less common for a child prodigy to make it all the way. Just because this kid appears more prodigious than most doesn't mean he'll be better; it could mean he'll burn out faster, become injured more quickly, resent the game more bitterly... Someone may have already said this, but so many parents get caught up in the Athletic College Scholarship hype or NHL hype that the game is eventually no fun for the kids. If my son takes to hockey and loves it thats cool, all I care about is him doing well in school, developing good character, and staying the f*ck out of trouble. If he turns out to be sick at hockey, great. Thats just a bonus. I think people lose sight of the big picture of team sports and their benefit to youth.
