vnderachiever 3 Report post Posted April 22, 2009 OK so I'm FINALLY migrating from roller to ice, and I have a quick question or two for you guru's out there.I would consider myself a fairly strong skater, not the quickest but fundamentally I'm all there. I'm a big guy and I've been used to the stiffest roller boots I can find (Mission Boss and the Cobalt Q right now)... Is it worth it for me to go out and spend money on something like an x:50 or an s15 etc (pending fit) or should I stick with a lower end skate until I get my feet under me? Basically what I'm asking is will I be able to train myself to skate with a softer boot, then spend the money on something worthwhile? or should I just go out and get a higher end skate to begin with.A local rink has public skating every weekday morning for 8 bucks for 2 hours so I figure i'll spend 2-3 days a week down there (no stick/puck) until I feel I can skate and hold my own in an open hockey session. I'd hate to be THAT guy! :-P Thanks for any and all advice you can share :)
Joker518 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2009 The big retailers will start blowing out their inventory of Vapor XXXX skates shortly. Once you can score a pair for around $300 you should jump on that. I wouldn't recommend going all out spending $400 to $500 on boots when you're just starting out. Just make sure whatever you do, find a skate that fits your foot correctly. With ice hockey skates nowadays even the new stuff at the $200 level from the big guys are excellent values. A guy just starting out wouldn't even apreciate the minute differences in weight and performance you get from the upper tier stuff anyway. It's a waste of money you could be spending on some baddass gloves =)
vnderachiever 3 Report post Posted April 22, 2009 Thanks for the quick reply. I've actually got an in at a LHS that I can get some pretty awesome deals (get vapor xxxx sticks for 130 cash etc). That being said I may be able to either snag a pair of the XXXX's for like 275 or so (pending fit of course). That basically answers my question though. I'll either look to get a closeout high end or a mid-range skate. Thanks!!
