Creating a mould for custom skates

Recommended Posts

After a bit of searching, the manager at one of our ice rinks has managed to organise some custom Jr skates (Graf) for me.

Downside is, I have to arrange my own foot mould. Anyway, I've called 10 podiatrists and it appears none of them are interested in making a mould of my foot and ankle (the ankle is the most important part).

Therefore, Im going to purchase some Bont Moulding Sox and make my own mould.

Does anyone know the do's and don'ts for this kind of thing?

For example, my foot tracings were done whilst I was sitting in a chair, do I do the same whilst making the foot mould?

(The bont socks have instructions, but I have a feeling that moulds for speed skates are different to those for hockey skates)

Sorry if this seems like stupid topic, but I wanted to check with people who have done/had these done, as we dont have the benefit of experiance and all questions are relayed from me, to the rink manager, to the distributer, to someone at Graf and back again (chinese whispers anyone?).

Custom hockey skates are a rarity here, custom hockey skates requiring a foot mould are basically unheard of (its going to be fun trying to list these as a special item on the home and contents insurance!).

Shame Im not into speed skating, then it would be as easy as a plane ticket to the other side of the country.

According to the Oz distributor for Graf, they said they will make my skate using a mould like this. Or have I been told a load of crap?

I have issues with my ankle bones (high and oversized) and my foot is apparently wide (9.5cm/9.75cm) for its length (23.5cm/24.5cm). Arches are normal thankfully and so is the heel.

Im a size 4.5 in NB skates, however Im spilling over the top of the boot volume wise. A size 5 has too much volume.

My LHS rang around trying to find a skate that would fit my foot soley based on length and width - apparently CCM, Mission, NB, RBK, Easton dont come close. Graf has something, which Im going to try, but I dont expect it will accommodate my ankle bones (the smaller the skate to accommodate the length, the more the ankle bones get mashed against the outersole of the boot).

Basically, Im trying to shove a wide adult female foot into a Jr male skate and its just not working.

My current pair of skates (Mission Assasin Jr 5.5), have been stretched and punched. I can skate in them, but my feet arent happy about this arrangement.

There is a severe lack of options around here. There is one person who has the machinery to punch and stretch skates. He doesnt do it very often and its not the best job, but thankfully, its allowed me to learn to skate/play hockey for a few hours a week.

Ive looked at freestyle skates as an alternative, same problems as hockey skates.
