How do you remove the bearings?

Recommended Posts

Hey, I just bought new Labeda Grippers to replace my chunk'd Rink Rats and I am trying to take the bearings out of the Rink Rats to put in the Grippers. Do I need a special tool or would a hammer and screwdriver work (I think that may dent the bearings)?

What size bearings 608 or 688? and what style spacers that information may be necesary to give you a step by step answer. If you want the absolute best removal process with the least likelihood of damaging your bearings you should get a bearing press. Some will say that is overkill but I have one that came with my old rec K2 skates and I swear by it. Whatever you do I would say the words bearings and hammer never belong in the same sentence. :(

You get one of those 3 pronged screwdriver/allen wrench tool. Just push on one end and out pops the bearings.

maybe my better question would have been what size axels if they are the smaller axels (6mm I believe) then the three prong tool Guitarmy showed you will work very well as will a pen for that matter. What you do is push it into the axel space until it hits the shoulder of the bearing spacer and pushes the opposite side bearing out of the wheel then you remove the loosened bearing and spacer and can push out the remaining bearing with a finger or your tool. With larger 8mm axels the bearing spacers do not have the sleeve that fits into the axel hole on the bearing so that method does not work as well I have found that the best way for me to remove bearings in that instance is to use the axel. I insert just enough of the axel into the bearing on one side but not all the way through to the spacer then I gently try to torque the bearing out of its seat, then you can remove the floating spacer and push the remaining bearing out the other side.
