Completley torn ACL

Recommended Posts

Won't be a while before that happens. I'm aiming to start skating again sometime in January/February. I play roller, but skating in general, I will keep you posted on how it feels once I can do it again.

My big goal post surgery is testing for black belt. Something I would have done in October. I'll probably end up missing my next chance at it too. Oh well it will be all that much sweeter when I do get it.

With your knee having been thru the repair route maybe you should consider going to ice?

It always seemed like more wear and tear on my knee playing roller than playing ice.

I'm not sure if my perspective is supportable by science but that's how it felt for me.

Good luck.

I've honestly been considering not playing at all. I don't know how much longer I'll be able to have the time and the money to play. I would be playing ice, but around here its SOOOOOOOOOOOO expensive. There's 2 rinks each 30 min away. Roller rink is right next to where I work (less than 10min away). Definitely going to have some thinking to do when the time comes.

Not trying to resurect a few month old thread but.... :D

I tore my right ACL on Father's Day. I had surgery last Monday, and they used my patella tendon for the procedure. I am planning on playing when I come back. Anymore input on people who've come back from this would be great. It would be nice to have something to look forward to haha.

Wife tore her acl and had reconstructive surgery (36 years old at the time of the injury). Doctor was the primary sports physician for many of the detroit red wings, lions, etc. He said Chelios had been playing on a torn ACL for a long time and finally had it fixed (i think he had it fixed).

Anyway, my freind had the same surgery done with the patella fix (he seemd to be in rehab for longer than my wife). My Wife had it done and the doc decided to use part of the hamstring to repair instead of the patella (I think the doc was liking the hamstring results better by that time). This is the same doc that did the major radical surgery on Yzermans knee so he seemed to really know what he was talking about. Anyway, she did her rehab religiously and was back in business in a few months.

My neighbor just tore her ACL skiing and had surgery and is limping around and looks like she will never get back to normal. I don't think she used the automatic knee motion machine my wife used for a few months lying in bed. You really have to keep the knee moving and get back on it to rebuild the strength.

My wife is now 100% and you would never know she had the injury as she runs, etc now with no problems/pains, etc. Good luck, I know if you don't get the surgery , I think there is a higher incidence of arthritis, etc as you age which could really hobble an active lifestyle growing older. My wife only had a small scar at the front side of her knee from the surgery. It was done outpatient.

I was told that I will have arthritis starting in about 15-20 years from now (22 now) which sucks but I can't avoid it now. I had an option to have the hamstring graft but since ligaments connect bone to bone it would be stronger using the patella tendon because they take the bone contact off the knee cap and the shin bone making the graft easier. That's what I was told, and my surgeon was trained in it. Anyway I'm hoping to off my crutches soon. I had a minor set back because of my swelling. I have the worst bruise on the inside of my ankle to my foot that prevents me from doing some of my PT exercises.
