Pat Quinn named Oiler's Head Coach

And that was the sound of the Oilers running dry.

May as well start speculating on the blowing-the-team-up deadline trades for next March.

The Leafs under Quinn were the single most boring team I've ever seen. They made the Wild look like the greatest show on earth.

I found it quite the opposite. Quinn didn't play a trap, or anything even close to it - the Leafs were pretty freewheeling in the Quinn era.

I never said they played a trap - I just said they were boring. One can play an exciting, creative, uptemo game based on WSL - the Wings have proved that. Quinn's Leafs played monotonous, braindead hockey: slow, chippy, and entirely devoid of anything interesting.

I don't know what games you were watching, but I saw some pretty entertaining hockey in that era. Roberts, Mogilny, Sundin in his prime. Some terrific goaltending from Joseph and Belfour. A lot of run and gun games. Incredible playoff series rivalries against Ottawa. I don't think too many people would have called the Leafs a "boring" team under Quinn, so I'm suprised at such a strong opinon to the contrary.

Quinn's Leafs were also one of the best teams in the East. He is quite successful and I think he was widely regarded as the best unemployed coach until now. He received multiple NHL coaching offers he turned down before this.

He had a stigma as a coach who could only coach veterans...I think his stint with Hockey Canada at the U18 probably opened some eyes. A team like Edmonton that is almost all youth took a second look at him as an option.

With Renney and Buchberger as assistants that is an interesting mix. I'm not sold on recycling Quinn again but it does fit with Tambellini's desire to ice a more aggressive, bigger team.

Whether Quinn's style of hockey works with the lineup they have is another question.
