Measuring Stick Lie

Recommended Posts

Quick question about stick lie - is there a standard method of measuring this?

Case in point - I have a TPS R4 Afinogenov, which the pattern DB lists at a 5 lie. I have an RBK Modano that the fellow on the RBK stick thread tells me is a 6 lie.

I hold both sticks by the blade, and line them up on top of one another. The shaft of the RBK has a substantially shallower angle than that of the TPS, despite being the opposite according to the lie specs.

Am I comparing incorrectly?

I have found that the lie on every stick is very different. From company to company and within the same company. For example Bauer Lindros lie 6 to Nasland lie 6, not the same. Warrior 5 draper compairs with sakic lie 5.5 easton. Most of the lies today have a big rocker to fit a wider range. It's difficult to really tell which Lie number is right or wrong untill you try it. IMO

Bringing the never-ending "LIE" debate back to light, only b/c I just came back from LHS, where I tried to compare/contrast the stated lies for the two major players, EASTON and BAUER.

Completely agree with Tooomey's post above..

Bauer P88 vs Bauer P92, both labeled 6, MSH classifies them as 5.5.. to me, P88 seemed LOWER (closer to 5.5) than the P92 (closer to 6).. would most agree?

Same thing w/ Easton.. Iginla appeared LOWER than the Sakic and the Drury was somewhere in between.

Then again, I'm certainly NO expert, and may or may not have been measuring the lies appropriately/correctly.

Given the importance of a stick's lie to one's game, it's completely FRUSTRATING as a consumer to find the right lie for you.. an expensive trial and error process, that's for sure.

I agree to an extent but truth be told, the difference in 5 to 5.5 is very slight, we're talking 1.25 degrees. I'm someone who ideally uses a 4.5-4.75, but I have no problem going up to 5.5 generally. As for rocker, yeah, it's tricky, but as far as I know, there's rocker scale, so...
