Prepping Sticks

What do you guys do before you dip or paint a composite stick? Do you sand them down a bit or just leave them as is? I think I know the basics (make sure stick is clean, make sure you know what you are doing, etc) but if there is a way to make the paint more durable or last longer, I would like to know about it.

Sand with a fine grit, paint, clear-coat.
