Moving Cross Country - Looking for Some Advice

Recommended Posts

I'll spare everyone the boring details, but I'm going to be moving cross country (literally coast-to-coast) in a couple months and I'm looking to see if anyone has advice on how to make the moving process as smooth as possible. I'm also looking for a moving company thats reliable, but not too expensive. I've got about a 1 bedroom apartment's worth of furniture and the lowest quote I've gotten so far is about $1500. Is this a reasonable deal or should I keep looking for something lower? Thanks in advance.

Make sure that when you get a quote that you get a fixed price. They come in and "estimate" your total weight. If you don't get a fixed price, they will add on to your quoted price if it is heavier than they estimated.

If you don't mind doing the initial manual labor yourself......a POD would be well worth your while, as at that point you are only paying for your transportation costs, and not the packing and unloading costs.

To answer the first question: I'm moving East to West.

As for the PODS suggestion, I thought that might be a good idea too, until I looked into it and they wanted over $3K (including the $180 or so they charge just for the POD). If they were doing all the packing/unpacking, etc. I could understand the $3K, but for me to do all the packing and them to charge me that just for driving it cross country was a little much.

That's crazy! I never thought it would be that much when you are loading and unloading all the stuff yourself.

Yeah - they were charging about $2900 just for the transport. They also wanted to charge $200 for warehouse storage, when they thing should never see a warehouse. A couple other companies have similar setups that are more reasonable, but still highly expensive.
