Tongue Flop

Recommended Posts

Andrei Markov's injury is a good argument against flopping the tongue. Check the video at 5:50 of October 3rd's Coach's Corner. Hopefully this LINK works.

Yea, I've always felt like I was going to take a puck off the my ankle when I flopped my tongues. I feel more comfortable having them tucked under my shin guards when I play defense anyway.

That's why I don't understand tongue flopping. The tongues in hockey skates are there to add extra padding between your shin guard and your ankle. Having your tongue flopped out just eliminates the protection, why keep the tongue in anyways if you're going to flop?

i thought it was for the laces but w/e. i wear them outside of my shin pads and didn't like them rubbing so i started flopping, i don't like the feeling of them inside of my shin pads

I have them flopped in my XXXX's, but kinda out of necessity as I like to tuck my shins right down into the tongue area of the skate, as this helps keep my heel down. This basically forces the flop.

ZINC - Wouldn't just tightening the skates normally with the tongue in it's natural position (under the bottom of the shin pad) force your heel down anyways?

I know back in the day with the old socks with stirrups, you really couldn't put your tongues under the shin pads. I don't think I could ever do that again. Mind you, that was when I first started playing back around '79ish....

^ Probably, but like I said, I also wear my shinpads under the tongue which pretty much automatically make them flop. I didn't do anything special besides just use them a lot and I have pretty much full flop now.

I got 40's and had no problem flopping them took less then a day. With that hard plastic piece in the tongue it makes for easy flop just had to tie the tongues down. Those are long gone now as i have switched out the tongues and had the ones from my G35's put in.

As for comfort each to their own but personally i do feel like i have more mobility with my tongues flopped and find it more comfortable
