Jason Harris 31 Report post Posted August 14, 2009 If they don't have funding for the telescopes, hard to imagine they could actually do something once they spot the asteroids.
K9 Unit 1 Report post Posted August 14, 2009 always thought we should close down NASA and use that money for something actually important, but then again i'm canadian so i don't have a say in this
eric42434224 1 Report post Posted August 14, 2009 I think NASA, and any space related research is some of the important stuff we should be funding.Exploration, scientific and medical research, etc.....all these are the things that benefit humanity....and are the things we should be funding.Other things that will remain unnamed....not so much. The number of advancements that come from space program research is astronomical, if you will pardon the pun. NASA is also instrumental in aviation safety. We should be doing more pure research, not less.

Not all research can be done on Earth, and NASA does not only do avaiation safety research.I am aware they did some testing of perfectly spherical crystals in the shuttle due to weightlessness recently (within the last 5 years) but thats about it for headlines on useful information. I understand that only somethings can be done in space, I'm not saying its worthless. I also understand that the money that goes into NASA could also provide much needed social programs, increase education rates dramatically across the country and make the population as a whole better off and more likely to produce engineers and scientists who can then further technological advances further at a faster rate. I have no problem saying that since financial resources are limited its ok to skim off the pure research a little in order to positively affect the education of an entire generation. Then again I think a few resources could be claimed before NASA anyways, say....1/25th of the military budget, but since the share of the budget the military gets hasn't decreased in 10 years and unlikely to soon, I'm ok with cannibalizing NASA a little. Chadd 916 Report post Posted August 15, 2009 Ok, we're getting way, way, way off topic here but....We don't need more social programs the ones we have are already killing our budget. Adding more people to entitlement programs and adding more programs is one of the worst ways we can spend taxpayer money. Throwing money into education doesn't make kids smarter either, we've been trying that for years. There is nothing better for an education than a home environment that values education and there is no government funded substitute for that. There are far better ways to reduce government spending than eliminating NASA or its funding. As for the lack of recent innovations, you can thank the constant budget cuts for that. The process was supposed to be:Space stationshuttle MoonMarsBudget cuts killed that process and has turned it into a mess. NASA needs to have a defined mission and capitalized appropriately. Ahriman 1 Report post Posted August 15, 2009 NASA's organization has been extremely poor for years. They need to get the departments in order before I'm willing to throw money at them. And no social programs haven't killed any budget, wars have. Cut that shit out and we got money to send everyone to college debt free. You'd seriously place NASA ahead of social programs like medicare and medicaid?

You'd seriously place NASA ahead of social programs like medicare and medicaid? As soon as NASA isn't run by political appointees and the earmarks are removed from their budget, the program would improve.I put it ahead of expanding social programs and both of those programs you mention are well known for their excess and fraud. One straw man wasn't enough, now you have to add war/defense to the debate? You've derailed this topic enough already. I guess you missed that part of my last post too.At least some people have the decency to make going off topic fun as opposed to some philosophical grudge match.
