My one90 vs. X50 narrow-footed experience

Recommended Posts

I'm 6'2 200lb and have been playing for 10 years..

Two years ago I bought a pair of one90s, in C-width as appropriate for my skinny feet. I had them baked three times but still felt as though i was skating with a brick underneath my lateral malleolus (outside ankle bone).. a punchout via the LHS mostly fixed the issue, though with heavier skating things would flare up.

Last January I was skating more than usual and developed what I'd describe as 'lateral skate bite' where the top of the skate would dig into the lateral tendons above the ankle bone causing me to leave the ice. Over several months I tried rest, padding, different socks, without relief, ending up getting my old 4000s out of the closet. The last pair of socks i tried were shorties and the upper edge of the one90skate even gave me a deep ulcer on my leg! I decided to look for other options. Having a definite narrow foot caused me to shop around several different hockey shops in the chicago area looking for someone to custom order narrow bauers. A couple of visits and phone calls to Gunzo's got me nowhere, and Fred from Fred's proshop in Mundelein gave me a runaround. A buddy who previously worked for Gunzos told me that it's too much work for somebody to order custom skates, they'd rather not bother. I also tried one of "the" california pro shop listed here, they never returned my call.

Fortunately, I gave a regular pair of the x50s a try. Despite the wide boot, they lace down fairly tight and feel quite comfortable and secure. They seemed broken in after one bake and a few skates. The only downside is they're not as light feeling as the one90s.

So, if you've got a narrow foot like me (and perhaps not quite so narrow an ankle) don't screw around with the one90s or 95s.. you'll wish you'd have gone with the x50s/x60s. (btw I tried the bauer XXXX and felt like I was swimming in those..)

Sounds like you have yet to find the right pair of skates for your feet. From my personal experience, you need to go into a skate fitting with an open mind and not be set on buying the One90s or new Vapors. Have you tried on the Graf 703s? Sounds like Gunzo's is not a full service hockey shop. Maybe you should come up to Minnesota or Wisconsin if you want to get properly fitted for skates. Most likely have better options as well.
