Bad day for young roller player....

Recommended Posts

After spending the past month buying gear for my 9 year old son and helping him learn to skate and play roller hockey five minuted before we were ready to wrap things up for the evening and go home he fell and broke his arm. No skating or hockey for at least 6 weeks. I feel a little guilty because he had been wearing all the safety gear right down to padded ice hockey pants but had just removed his gloves and elbow pads when he fell and hit the blacktop. After playing for 20+ years and falling or being knocked down a hundred times I have never broken a bone and a month into it my son falls and breaks his arm. If I have learned anything at all it would be to make sure that the skates come off first when dealing with young inexperienced players.

He's 9, at that age they practically bounce back. It will heal and if the love for the game is still there he will play again. One of the kids I have been coaching since he was 8 broke his wrist two weeks before the Midget season opened here. He healed, come back and now looks solid on the ice.
